Acupuncture is a form of treatment as old as the history of humanity, which means “needle, sharp thing” and uncture “piercing” in Latin. Although the Chinese records have the most rooted and oldest written sources on this subject, many societies in many different places have practiced acupuncture in various forms and tools (liquid, nail-like) in earlier times.
How does acupuncture work?
Acupuncture improves the functions of the body and supports the natural self-healing process by stimulating specific points in certain anatomical regions. The most common method used to stimulate acupuncture points is the gentle insertion of thin, sterile needles into areas of skin and underlying tissue. Pressure, heat, or electrical stimulation can further increase the effects.
Traditional Chinese Medicine is based on an ancient philosophy that describes the universe and the body in terms of two opposing forces: yin and yang. When these forces are in balance, the body is healthy. Energy called “qi” (pronounced “chi”) flows through the body along certain pathways called meridians. This constant flow of energy keeps the yin and yang forces in balance.
However, if the flow of energy is blocked, such as water trapped behind a dam, the interruption can cause pain, dysfunction, or illness. Acupuncture therapy can release blocked qi in the body and stimulate the function, awakening the body’s natural healing response through various physiological systems. Modern research has shown the effects of acupuncture on the nervous system, endocrine and immune systems, cardiovascular system and digestive system.
Acupuncture can help relieve pain, increase sleep quality, improve digestive, nervous, immune and hormonal system functions, and reduce stress effectively by stimulating various systems of the body.
What happens during acupuncture treatment?
First, together as your acupuncture practitioner, we will review your health history face-toface. We will then examine the shape, color and coating of your tongue, feel your pulse and possibly perform some additional physical examinations depending on your personal health needs. Using these unique acupuncture-specific assessment tools, we can recommend an appropriate treatment plan to address your particular situation. To begin acupuncture treatment, sensitive acupuncture points are stimulated in various parts of your body while you lie comfortably on a treatment table. Because the fine needles are gently inserted, most people experience little to no discomfort. Needles are usually held for 20 to 30 minutes.
How many acupuncture session will I need?
The frequency and number of treatments varies from person to person. Some people experience dramatic relief with the first treatment. For complex or long-term chronic conditions, one to two treatments per week for several months may be recommended. A total of eight to ten applications may be required for acute problems, usually less, but often for chronic problems. After the first application, a personalized treatment plan including the expected number of treatments is decided together.
